TIERS
Three Distinct Garden Tiers
Upper tier: summer house retreat. The top level is home to a stylish summer house, a great addition for a home office, hobby space or quiet escape. It sits on a wood-effect porcelain base that gives the look of decking without the rot, rot treatment or regular staining.
Middle tier: entertaining and lawn space. The middle level combines a generous buff porcelain patio with a low-maintenance artificial lawn. It’s ideal for outdoor dining, family time and garden gatherings, and the lawn stays green with no mowing.
Lower tier: paved wrap-around and access. At the bottom, paving wraps around both sides of the house, with steps leading up to the rest of the garden. It makes the whole space practical to get around, and linear drainage helps keep surface water under control.
MATERIALS INSIGHT
Porcelain Paving: Two Finishes
We used two types of porcelain on this project:

Buff porcelain for the main patio and paved areas, giving a warm, bright finish

Wood-effect porcelain around the summer house for a natural timber look
Porcelain paving is one of the most popular choices for modern gardens. It’s hard-wearing, frost resistant, stain resistant, slip resistant and very easy to clean.
Sandstone Edging and Bullnosed Steps
Sandstone edging gives the paving clean, defined borders, and bullnosed sandstone steps add a traditional, practical touch. Together they bring character and warmth that contrasts nicely with the modern porcelain.
Planters with Step Feature
Between the tiers we built raised planters with a central step feature. They add structure, texture and colour, with rockery-style planting and Japanese maples that bring seasonal interest. They also soften the transition between levels.
Sawn Sandstone Uprights and Porcelain Clad Walling
The retaining walls are finished with sawn sandstone uprights and porcelain cladding. This gives a tidy, durable, low-maintenance finish and ties the walls in with the paving.
